Really helpful practical advice!! There’s such a need for this I think! I’m trying something new this semester: mandatory 10 minute consultations with me sometime during the first four weeks (I have 55 students across two lecture classes, so this is an investment). When they book their appt, I set up a Google folder with a doc with notes from their “intake form” and our discussion, and a Google sheet that I will update every three weeks so that they can see their progress (I do hybrid specs grading/course grade bundles). I haven’t found Canvas to be effective in how alt-grades are communicated, but I should probably meet with our instructional tech folks. I’m also incorporating three metacog reflections: two tied to assignments and a cumulative one for the course at the end as a way to tiptoe toward collab grading. :-) happy to report that so far I’m VERY pleased with these initial consults and I’m hoping it will be worthwhile for the students.

Thank you so much for sharing what you've implemented, Rebecca! I'm curious -- what strategies do you use to make the consultations mandatory? I ask because since moving to alternative grading, I have been using grading structures that make "mandatory" things harder to enforce!

Here's a past blog post about Canvas implementation, in case there are useful nuggets there: https://gradingforgrowth.com/p/using-the-canvas-gradebook-with-specifications

I use Canvas for my course, and while my set-up is far from perfect, happy to bounce ideas off each other if you want to reach out! Would also love to hear how your off-Canvas tracking works. halley dot mccormick at wwcc dot edu
