While there is no "single widely-accepted definition of 'innovation'," a few years back I co-authored a paper describing a taxonomy of pedagogical innovation. (Palmer, M. S., & Giering, J. A. (2023). Characterizing pedagogical innovation in higher education. Innovative Higher Education, 49, 353-373. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10755-023-09681-6). We not only define pedagogical innovation but also describe its key characteristics, including the Focus of Innovation, Degree of Innovation, Intended Outcomes, Barriers to Adoption, Risks of Adoption, and direct and indirect Costs. Two important points:

1. By our definition, for something to be pedagogically innovative, it must increase educational equity, student retention or persistence, sense of belonging, learning or engagement, or instructor engagement or efficiency.

2. Pedagogical innovation is contextual. This means the degree of innovativeness will change depending on a host of situational factors.

So, rather than asking, Is alternative grading innovative?, possibly better questions might be, In what ways are alternative grading approaches innovative? and, What are the barriers, risks, and costs associated with adopting alternative grading approaches? The good news: Under most conditions, alternative grading approaches are hands down valuable pedagogical innovations. (I'm very intentionally using "approaches" here since alternative grading takes on a range of innovativeness, from little "i" innovations (e.g., allowing revisions or giving additional feedback opportunities) to big "I" innovations (e.g., full-blown specs or standards-based grading schemes.))
