I do! (and we even talk about some unusual symbols in class) You can lead a horse to water...

Super helpful post. I really like the idea of in-class/out-of-class assessments. Is there anything fancy about the administration of your out-of-class assessments? Do students just submit a PDF to the LMS? Or paper? Maybe you posted about this system back when you started...

Thanks, Patti! Nothing fancy about out-of-class: I give students a paper copy of the quiz at the end of class, students take it on their own time, and then they scan and submit a PDF on our LMS (they're used to scanning for daily prep assignments too, so nothing surprising). The final exam was entirely on paper, but that's all.

"You will not be surprised to hear that students found the in-class exams more stressful.³ I hate proctoring in-person exams, not least because of the feeling that I’m inflicting unnecessary stress on students. This experiment with in-class assessment reminded me forcibly of why I’d gotten rid of them in the first place.⁴"

So much this.

No doubt. That's why I was a little surprised that the outcomes (in class vs. out of class) were similar. I'm glad that I left most of the assessments out of class, and I'll keep doing that.
